Tornados 2008 The Worst on Record

Tornados hitting U.S. cities? One hit the source of news for many areas of the world, Atlanta and CNN. The natural disasters that are happening are of biblical proportion.

The tornado cause $100s of millions of dollars of damage in Atlanta. Did you know that? Why or why not? Has this ever happened to Atlanta?

If that's not enough to get the world's attention, then how about tornados in Washington, D.C. while Congress was in session?

Journal of Anectdotal Evidence: Hurricane Bertha

I made up the "Journal of Anecdotal Evidence" as a farce, something to laugh about and a place to send manuscripts on what a researcher that s/he heard somewhere, somehow, sometime. So at least I'm up front about it. It seems as though there have been extreme weather reports, some of which reach biblical proportions. So I won't catch them all, but will try to post what I do see.

So here is an example that in and of itself doesn't prove anything, but is fascinating anyway. There are excellent web sites out there including Accuweather (too pricey for me, I'm afraid, but great content and experts), and one of the perhaps lesser known is wunderground.com that I believe began at the University of Michigan (Go Bucks!). There is a blog about tropical weather, and we have at least one oddity already in the young hurricane season.

(c) 2008, wunderground.com, accessed 19 July 2008.

According to the National Weather Service (6:15 PM EDT, 19 July 2008)

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico...

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane
Bertha...located about 450 miles east-southeast of Cape Race
Newfoundland.

What?! A hurricane that far north? And that's not all. According to Reuters, accessed 6:23 PM 19 July 2008:
MIAMI, July 18 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Bertha strengthened again into a hurricane on Friday as it accelerated toward the northeast over the open Atlantic, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The top sustained winds of the first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic storm season had increased to 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour), just over the threshold at which tropical storms are upgraded, the Miami-based center said at 4:30 p.m. EDT (2230 GMT).

Bertha, an unusually resilient storm that appears likely to enter the history books as one of the longest-lived Atlantic storms on record [emphasis added], was no threat to land.
I am not a meteorologist, but I am a bit of a weather fanatic (meaning I'm very interested in it). It's this kind of extreme, "longest-lived Atlantic storms on record," that I will post as I see them. Briefly noted, there has been a back and forth about whether global warming will make hurricanes more fierce. A current research report just released goes back to the notion that hurricanes will be more fierce:
The nation can adapt to the changes that will result, the EPA report says, but it will have to weather heat waves and downpours, strengthened hurricanes, heat waves, air pollution and droughts. Source: http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Environmental_Protection_Agency_Warns_Of_Climate_Change_Toll_On_Health_20562.html, accessed 19 July 2008.
The report was issued on July 17 and reportedly was deliberately held back when it was ready to be presented in April. The document has extreme predictions about the effects of Global Warming, and this is an agency run by the Bush Administration (which probably explains the delay, but makes the dire predictions all the more striking).

News Reports: Global Warming Correlates With Kidney Stones

It seems that scientists who were at liberty to conduct their research without being beholden to a stakeholder in the chaos (I think the discussion about global warming should be called "chaos" almost as in the Get Smart TV series and recent film in which "KAOS," the bad guys [e.g., the USSR/KGB] existed to stir things up and "CONTROL" [U.S./CIA] existed to counter KAOS's nefarious activities) are far more likely to accept global warming as an existing condition and are moving on to how we can do something about it.

Nevertheless, what appears to be a very vocal minority has done an excellent job of grabbing the megaphone. Search youtube.com for "global warming" skeptics and you will find video programs, very professionally produced, in which those skeptics (KAOS) are calling the science behind global warming community (CONTROL) as "lies." I'm a research professor and can tel you that if you can critique another's research (peer-reviewed research) and find fault, calling the other researcher a "liar" is pretty outrageous. This lowbrow reaction to global warming research appeals to people in the world who, for whatever reason including political ones, grab the "liars!" quotes and amplify them.

Separating the Smoke from the Fire

It's nothing new for someone or a group of people with a political agenda that they want to put on stage. Blogs evolved into opinion sites and so it is not surprising that activists that want to clear or blur the "truth" about the phenomenon of global warming would adopt this new form of communication and, they hope, persuasion. A site that makes its purpose well know is called "Rising Tide" at http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/ (accessed 17 July 2008). On that site, they list on the right side of the screen:

About

The site was accessed 17 July 2008 and included in the "About" section is this paragraph:

What is Rising Tide?

Rising Tide is an international network born out of the conviction that corporate-friendly and state-sponsored “solutions” to climate change will not save us. As a matter of survival, we must decrease our dependence on the industries and institutions that are destroying the planet and work toward community autonomy and sustainable living.

The problem is not all blogs are so crystal clear. In creating a taxonomy of blogs related to global warming, finding a prominent and truthful "About Us" would seem to be a good thing. Let's see, how can we test this theory. Without knowing, I would assume the political movement, GreenPeace, probably is on the side of those who want to change, for example, the amount of CO2 artificially put into the atmosphere by human activities including all fossil fuel powered motors (lawn mowers, for example, add their share of pollutants in the air). OK, let's see if GreenPeace has a blog on global warming or a position statement from their web site.

How to talk to global warming skeptics....

See http://gristmill.grist.org/skeptics for arguments to use in persuading skeptics that we have a serious problem and it's only getting worse. What remains remarkable to me is the seemingly total lack of discussion about other unintended consequences of burning fossil fuels, especially lung disease. Long before we had terrorist labels, people in Atlanta already had their own color codes as to whether it was safe for small children, the elderly, or those whose respiratory diseases (and probably others like heart disease...I don't pretend to know because I am not a medical doctor).

Why isn't the mainsteam media focusing on this? It must be a real mystery to conservatives who love to say the mainstream media is liberal (they might mean "anti-extremist" as in right wing radio talk shows which are clearly extremists).

You know, it's all kind of mind boggling. I don't know how well off the coal industry, but we all know the oil companies could buy the state of California if the wanted to, and probably through in Canada for good measure.

If Congress threatens some politically expedient way to tax oil companies in an election year, that will not be the long term answer. What I don't understand is do the oil companies need financial incentives to plow into alternative sources of energy, or are they willing to take the "windfall" profits and do the job?

If you told someone in 1976 that we'd still be getting the same ballpark figure in vehicle mileage, they would think you were crazy. I confess that my brethren in academia seemingly should have done something by now. At least I know they are trying. Here's the irony: the next Bill Gates might be the one who produces a modestly priced hudrogen engine and a distribution channel to make it readily available. For the latter, does anyone actually believe that gas stations can be modified to include Hyrdogen "pumps?"

Hyrdogen-powered cars could go down as one of the most rapidly adopted technology in the history of diffusion of innovations research. Many or most of us would feel the pressure to change. I'm not an engineer, but I am a pragmatist. If there is no money for research, it may not be addressed. Conversely, if there is money to burn (sorry, couldn't resist), them there are dollars available for research.

Perhaps the first hydrogen-powered automobile and/or the person or organization that makes it succeed will become the next Rockefellers.

By far the greatest payoffs for high gasoline prices include driving less (it's actually happening), the oil industry having the resources to invest in R&D with their current windfall, and the shock in the marketplace about wasting a fossil fuel and polluting at the same time.

Skeptic Web Sites and Blogs

on 26 June 2008 finds almost one million hits:

Clearly, I do not endorse sites that have made evidence of global warming into a political fight. If any of these sites takes the evidence gathered about global warming and uses their own evidence and best arguments to discredit the global warming science community's evidence, then I will be impressed and want to know more. Unfortunately, I'm not sure any of them do this. I liken what they are doing to negative political advertising. Although there has been some hope in this year's primaries that negative advertising doesn't always work, people who want to be comforted into thinking global warming is a myth will cling to these resources like a toddler and his "blankie."

I repeat, I would not expect unbiased evidence from these conservative organizations that satirize or otherwise try to discredit the evidence we have about global warming. Any that do deserve my attention, and I hope someone will point to them for me. I post these as a service to those who are trying to understand what we can do about global warming.

Bush Administration: Dire Predictions about Weather Extremes From Global Warming

Scientists: Weather extremes consistent with global warming USA Today, 19 June 2008

WASHINGTON — If you think the weather is getting more extreme, you're right — and global warming caused by human activity probably is the reason, according to a report released Thursday by a panel of government scientists.
The report comes as the Midwest copes with record rainfall and catastrophic flooding.
There is strong evidence the increasing frequency of extreme rain, heat, drought and tropical storms is caused by global climate change, according to the report from the U.S. Climate Change Science Program. Souce: usatoday.com

CLIMATE CRYSTAL BALL Souce: usatoday.com

According to the U.S. Climate Change Science Program's most recent 3.3 report, people can expect these environmental changes in the future:

Hot temperatures and heat waves will be more likely, as the number of cold nights and "frost days" will decrease. Strong waves will erode Arctic coastlines in Alaska and Canada
The Atlantic and Pacific basins will be hit with harder cold-season storms, packed with stronger winds and taller waves. Source: Weather and Climate Extremes in a Changing Climate brochure by CCSP.

The Clintons All Over Again: Why the "Hatred" Toward Global Warming Experts?

I invite those who believe "global warming as a myth" to explain to my why this is a political issue, why impoverished professors like me are somehow becoming rich by pointing to the dead canary in the mine, how researchers on Global Warming are profiting or have profits as their main source of interest. Professors do not choose this career for the money, there's no question about that. And why is it that so many online discontents about global warming rely on childish cheap shots, bad grammar, and caricatures of Al Gore? There should be no need to "shoot the messenger" if your proof that global warming is a myth is held up to scientific scrutiny, not simply mocking those with whom you don't agree. Of course, there were a significant number of Americans who also thought we should have stayed out of WWII.

Bananas and Coffee: Why do record setting cold days not contradict Global Warming?

You may use this content (better still, argue with me!), but please cite my ideas as © 2007, Dr. Bruce Klopfenstein. Find any typos? Please let me know.

Cap Cod Today quotes Times of India in a story published December 26, 2005. It's the same argument that if it's really cold today, there must not be any Global Warming. For those who area trying to understand it, let me try it this way:

If you took the earth's temperature in any one region on the earth on any given day, you will find records and (nothing new here) anomalies from which you can not extrapolate (or extend) to the rest of the earth.

If your child's temperature is 102.3 and anyone told you it's a trend in body temperatures all over the globe, you might reach for your phone and call 911. At any point in time there will be temperature anomalies around the world. When examples like this one happen, it's called citing "anecdotal evidence." If you had cancer and found out that someone survived cancer on a diet of bananas and coffee, it has little relevance for you or anyone else, unless other cancer patients are put on the banana/coffee diet and it is proven effective.

If you were an astronomy buff and the Hubble Telescope found a supernova, that would not suggest that other stars are about to explode. There is no relationship between an exploding star and its neighbors.

Sadly, global warming research suggests extremes in all directions, drought versus flooding, record cold and record heat. So while is is interesting to note phenomena as they occur, you wouldn't spent the rest of your life walking down sidewalks because you happened on a one dollar bill on a sidewalk.

Please comment as to whether or not this makes sense, not as to whether or not it supports your "global warming myth" dogma (see Dissidents Against Dogma).

Cold Weather Predicted by Global Warming Science

You may use this content (better still, argue with me!), but please cite my ideas as © 2007, Dr. Bruce Klopfenstein. Find any typos? Please let me know.

They call themselves global warming skeptics, which makes it sound as if they are in position to be persuaded or are not certain that global warming is a "myth." In fact, their blogs and web sites often have misleading titles that suggest the site is there to inform its readers about global warming when, in reality, the object is to raise doubts about global warming. An example that reoccurs is seen when there is a cold snap, even a record cold snap anywhere around the world. The "skeptics" jump all over this and try to grab headlines. Anyone persuaded by this "evidence" has not read about the science of global warming which predicts that the weather on a "daily" or annual basis is going to have extremes in both directions.

So, what we need to recognize is extremes in daily weather around the globe are predicted by global warming science. This same science tells us that regions of drought will be found near regions of flooding. This was very apparent in the summer of 2007 when northern Georgia was in an extreme drought while 250 miles to the northwest, Tennessee was being deluged by rain.

By the way, RealClimate "is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science." This is the kind of honest disclaimer needed on all sites discussing global warming and/or climate change.

Record Winter Becomes a Record Spring... What's Next?

This pickup truck, owned by former Victor resident Steve Petersen, appeared on the front page of the June 13 edition of the Kansas City Star. The truck is shown on top of what was once Petersen’s house in Manhattan, Kansas. Petersen and his family were on their way to Victor when the storm struck. Chris Oberholtz Photo / Kansas City Star. Photo courtesy of the Kansas City Star, http://www.kansascity.com/
As reported by Mitch Traphagen of the East Iowa Herald, June 19:

VICTOR - Snowfall and ice storms have turned into rainfall, tornados and flooding, leading many in East Iowa to wonder what is next? Could the weather get worse?

Extreme weather has become so common that if people haven’t been affected themselves, almost everyone knows someone who has...

It seems the 100-year floods are coming about every 10 years or so. What was thought to be the flood of the century in 1993, has been eclipsed beyond anyone’s imagination today. This was a 500 year flood.

But not everyone has been surprised by recent events.

In 1998, the United States Environmental Protection Agency published a report entitled, Climate Change and Iowa. In it, the EPA predicted a 20 percent increase in summertime precipitation - and also stated that an increase in the frequency and intensity of summer thunderstorms is possible. Based on the events of a decade later, that report seems ominously accurate.

In 2004, a report by the National Climate Data Center found a trend towards an overall increase in precipitation, temperature, streamflow, along with increases in extreme weather events that included a 14 percent increase in “heavy rain events” and a 20 percent increase in “very heavy rain events” during the 20th century.

In 1996, NOAA created the U.S. Climate Extremes Index which tracks changes in extreme weather events. The chart shows weather precipitation events as somewhat more extreme than average in the early part of the last century, falling to below average in the 30s, late 40s, late 50s and around 1970. In 1980, the trend picked up - by 2007, the index revealed extreme precipitation events were occurring at a pace well above average. The four highest points in the index, covering a century of data, have occurred in the past 15 years. One other thing is obvious on the index: As much as the averages rise, they also fall. In other words, based on past history, as extreme events increase in frequency, we should also expect that at some point, they will decrease.

2008 Tornado Worst on Record? Bush Administration Warns

You may use this content (better still, argue with me!), but please cite my ideas as © 2007, Dr. Bruce Klopfenstein. Find any typos? Please let me know.

NOAA,the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is an agency of the executive branch, has sounded the alarm bells even after the Bush administration admitted to censoring a report on Global Warming and delaying by 4 years the release of an embarrassing report showing that President Alfred E. Newman

This year may set records for tornadoes and tornado-related deaths. “We have already seen more than 115 tornado-related deaths, making this the deadliest tornado season since 1998,” said Greg Carbin, a meteorologist at NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.

“It is only the third time since the 1974 super tornado outbreak that there have been more than 100 tornado-related deaths during a single tornado season in the U.S.,” added Harold Brooks, a research meteorologist at NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory also in Norman. “In 1998 and 1984 there were 132 and 122 tornado-related deaths, respectively — 2008 will likely equal or exceed that record.”

Iowa Flooding Far Worse than 1993 Deluge

You may use this content (better still, argue with me!), but please cite my ideas as © 2007, Dr. Bruce Klopfenstein. Find any typos? Please let me know.

Science does not rely on anecdotal evidence, but without the first observations of the stars in the sky, where would astronomy be today? I expect stunning weather phenomena just as we have been seeing in recent years. Here's one of the many examples that I don't know if I can track. I believe simple examples of what's happening start the skeptic or the uninformed to wonder.

The rains that fell during the weekend of June 7-8 were fueled in part by moisture from Tropical Storm Alma/Arthur, which affected Central America May 29 - June 2. The Cedar River is expected to crest today at 31.8 feet, which is an amazing 19.8 feet above the flood stage of 12 feet. During the historic 1993 flood, the worst in recent history, the river hit only 19.27 feet, 7 feet above flood stage. Nine rivers in Iowa are at all-time record flood levels, and Iowa Governor Chet Culver has declared 83 of the state's 99 counties state disaster areas. Additional heavy rainfall is not expected over the Cedar River watershed over the next two days, so today should mark the peak of this year's historic flooding. The Wrath of Global Warming Skeptics (or Who Cares if Kids Get Asthma?)

Well, if you'd like to read a newspaper article (opinion?) that show some of the venom that is spewed by global warming skeptics (and I assume global warming alarmists (and I use "alarmist" in the sense that someone ought to be sounding the alarm bells)), see http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23819969-5007146,00.html. I'm not sure how much time I should take tracking down the 31,000 "scientists" who signed what must have been a mile-long petition saying "Na, na, na, na, na-a-a-a. The troposphere is cooling!" Hmmmm.... To the average citizen, what does cooling of the troposphere mean? Could it be that radiational cooling from the earth is actually redirecting heat back down upon us, and a cooling of the troposphere might actually mean the earth on which we live is warming? I have a Ph.D. and can be considered a scientist. Does it count if I sign a document saying "Yikes! Global warming is happening and faster than any models have predicted!"

This is where I need some punches from readers who think the 90s and 100s already occurring in the U.S. this spring are, once again, coincidences having nothing to do with 2007 being the hottest year on record and 2008 on track to beat it. How long can these coincidences be laughed off as phenomena like the reported cooling of the troposphere and what is has to do with global warming at the surface?

Tropospheric scientists with degrees from accredited universities unite! What is the answer? WAIT! A Google search on ' cooling troposphere ' (no apostrophes) brings this first result: A cooling troposphere and global warming can co-exist
Contact: James E. Rickman, elvis@lanl.gov, (505) 665-9203

Son of a gun! And I was just jabbing at the mean-spirited newspaper article cited above. And what do you know! My simplistic counter-attack may have merit! This continues to be the problem: more smoke from the "What, me worry?" call it climate change crowd. I have a new campaign I want to start hitting hard. If global warming skeptics are right, and I'd like the truth either way, why in the world would they not want to attack air pollution regardless? Don't believe in global warming, why not focus on the rapidly growing problem childhood asthma? Forget global warming, focus on pollution and explain why it's some kind of blessing in disquise that our children are breathing dirty air and are paying the price in lung disease. What am I missing?

Skeptics, do you really want to be on the side of those who don't give a damn about asthma? Skeptics with asthma, would you wish your asthma on anyone else?

For science; Against ignorance.
For factual reporting; Against poisonous propaganda.
For freedom; Against oppression.
For public service; Against corruption.
For democracy – open government of, by and for the people; Against fascism – authoritarian government of, by and for the corporations.

General Electric Claims CO2 "A Possible" Factor in Global Warming

The site above is satire from The DeSmog Project, Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace USA.

The following is a direct quote:

Despite all its green advertising claims, behind the scenes General Electric remains skeptical about the role of carbon dioxide in driving climate change. A May 28th GE press release announcing a new "clean coal" initiative states only that "CO2 is a possible contributing factor to climate change."

GE's multi-million dollar "Ecomagination" ad campaign paints the company as a concerned environmental steward and GE belongs to a growing coalition of companies calling for federal action on climate change. Kevin Grandia, the managing editor of a new collaborative web effort by several environmental groups to debunk the myth of "clean coal," noticed the GE press release and pointed to the inconsistency between the skeptical line in the release and GE's widely-publicized ads and public statements on climate change. Grandia notes that "considering the major marketing effort GE has undertaken to paint itself as a leader on reducing greenhouse gas emissions...[w]hy so much investment by GE in something they only see as a possibility?"

General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt admitted to Forbes magazine in 2005 that the company's lofty "Ecomagination" campaign is little more than a sales pitch. "It's primarily that," Immelt said. "In its essence it's a way to sell more products and services."

In order to confront similar greenwashing by the coal industry, environmental groups including The DeSmog Project, Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace USA launched a new website http://www.coal-is-clean.com/ to shatter the coal industry's "clean coal" myth by mocking the lengths the coal industry will go to portray coal as clean. A companion site http://www.coal-is-dirty.com/ explains the actual impacts of coal mining and burning.

Searching for Extreme Weather

record event report
National Weather Service
Grand Rapids, Michigan
0134 am EDT Sat June 07 2008... Record high low temperature at Grand Rapids on June 6th...

[Scroll down]

And the [Indiana] Governor worries it may not be the last blow. He said more rain, especially in the northern part of the state, could lead to even more flooding.

"Again, if more water comes down from north, we may have not seen the worst of it," Governor Daniels said.
Daniels spelled out what the state is doing to respond. He said the state of emergency declarations will help things happen more quickly.
"I wanted to make certain that if swift action's necessary to protect life or property that it happens on the fastest possible schedule," Governor Daniels said.
The Governor's Director of Homeland Security, Joe Wainscott, said this is some of the worst flooding he's ever witnessed.

A record high low temperature of 74 degrees was recored at Grand Rapids yesterday... June 6th.
The previous record high low temperature for June 6th was 72 set in both 1999 and in 1925.
Based on Grand Rapids records back to 1892... there has not been a day with a warmer low temperature earlier in the season. The low has been as warm as 74 degrees earlier than this twice... on June 1st 1934 and June 5th 1925.

While individual anomalies like this will occur, the question is if all of them were collected each day, would this represent a trend toward extreme weather? Note that extremes of all kind including cold are the result of global warming. Does such a collection exist?

NASA's Top Climate Scientist: Big Oil is Hiding a "Planet in Crisis"

Source: http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/04/nasas-top-clima.html, accessed 3 June 2008. Direct quote courtesy of http://www.dailygalaxy.com

"We've already reached the dangerous level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere," according to James Hansen, 67, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. "But there are ways to solve the problem" of heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which Hansen said has reached the "tipping point" of 385 parts per million.

Hansen calls for phasing out all coal-fired plants by 2030, taxing their emissions until then, and banning the building of new plants unless they are designed to trap and segregate the carbon dioxide they emit.

The major obstacle to saving the planet from its inhabitants is not technology, insisted Hansen, named one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2006 by Time magazine.
"The problem is that 90 percent of energy is fossil fuels. And that is such a huge business, it has permeated our government," he maintained. "What's become clear to me in the past several years is that both the executive branch and the legislative branch are strongly influenced by special fossil fuel interests," he said, referring to the providers of coal, oil and natural gas and the energy industry that burns them.

"You need a new Kyoto protocol with all the major emitters committed to it. Then you are cooking with gas."

Global warming has plunged the planet into a crisis and the fossil fuel industries are trying to hide the extent of the problem from the public, NASA's top climate scientist says.
